The Galloping Pavilion

[Competition Brief]

The Pavilion is a demountable building for Yorkshire Forward to promote, showcase and host events to celebrate the continuing Renaissance of Yorkshire’s great places.

It will stand independent of any other structures on a range of reasonably level sites – town square, city park, car park, moor, beach and even perhaps the sea. It will be a symbol of the best of Renaissance and communicate it’s intent wherever it is sited. It should provide a very public welcome and a sense of magic, attracting and engaging passers-by and encouraging them to enter.

The Design:

The focus of the design, lay within the possible 'influence' that bodies of people could have on the building.

The pavilion is comprised of four main elements.
1. A modular timber floor system
2. Repositionable columns
3. Modular inflatable roof system (balloons)
4. Seasonal skin

The two main design interventions that enable bodies of people to ‘influence’ the pavilion are:

1. The repositionable columns
•Three quarters down the base of the column is a bicycle pedal, a handle bar, and seat. By peddling this mechanism, the user is able to shift the arms located at the top of the column and to manipulate the ceiling.
•The column moves in two ways. Firstly the arms at the top can squeeze a balloon in the ceiling, thus controlling the density and light penetration. Secondly, the column can shift up and down, controlling the height of the ceiling.
•Users of the pavilion will most probably need to communicate with one another, and to work collectively in order to create a desirable environment.

2. The seasonal skin
•In order to provide shelter from horizontal wind, and insulation during colder days, a skin will wrap around the perimeter of the building.
•This skin must be made by a local body that the pavilion will be located within. i.e winter skin = Quilt stitched by local community hall.
